Safe, Efficient, and Collaborative Intelligence for Autonomous Systems (SECIAS)

The Safe, Efficient, and Collaborative Intelligence for Autonomous Systems (SECIAS) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site at Baylor University is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded summer research program. The program focuses on the future of intelligent autonomous systems; such as drones, self-driving vehicles, and robotic systems, are transforming industries ranging from transportation and logistics to disaster response and national defense.

Each summer, the program brings together 10 undergraduate students from across the country for a 10-week, hands-on research experience. Working closely with Baylor faculty mentors, students contribute to cutting-edge projects in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, autonomous decision-making, multi-agent systems, embedded and neuromorphic computing, explainable AI, and system safety and verification.

Participants gain practical research experience in Baylor’s state-of-the-art laboratories while developing technical, analytical, and teamwork skills. The program also includes professional development activities, graduate school preparation, and STEM outreach opportunities that help students explore future careers in engineering, computer science, and related fields.
